Everyone experiences emotional distress at some point in their life. This may be due to a personal loss, rejection in a relationship, a professional setback or a financial issue. Most of the time, you can bounce back in time, but there are some occasions where you may need a little help.

There may be certain negative patterns in your life that you feel unable to break on your own. Therapy is not just for people dealing with mental illness but for anyone experiencing intense emotions.

Therapists offer a safe, non-judgmental space

Therapy can provide you with a safe, non-judgmental space that allows you to explore your feelings, understand their root causes, place them in context and learn coping skills. According to the American Psychological Association, about 75% of people who go for talk therapy experience benefits. Unlike couples or family therapy, individual therapy focuses on you.

Interactive Counselling offers various types of therapy, including individual counselling and therapy sessions. Counsellors are available for in-office, online, or phone counselling sessions. Being able to reach a therapist from your phone or online may be easier for you.

Therapists are professionally trained listeners

If you’re thinking of trying therapy, you will realize that there are many different types. What you will do at each appointment depends on the therapist and the issues you want to address. You are likely to spend some time discussing how challenging emotions are affecting your life.

You may have to talk about some distressing thoughts and this may be difficult in the moment. However, it can be very healing to talk about what’s weighing on your mind and knowing that someone is listening, cares, and wants to help. You will receive constructive feedback that can enable you to live a happier, more fulfilling life.

Therapists use evidence-based treatment modalities

Therapists apply practically proven and scientifically validated procedures to help you cope with life more effectively. The influence of Freud has made certain patients worry that therapists will dig into their childhood to discover unconscious issues related to sex.

In psychodynamic therapy, you talk about what’s on your mind and this helps the therapist to find patterns in your thoughts or behavior that is contributing to your distress. You basically explore the relationship between your unconscious mind and your actions.

Psychodynamic therapy tends to be less popular than behavioral therapy today. Behavioral therapy is an action-oriented approach that can help you to change your behavioral responses. For example, cognitive behavioral therapy can help you learn how to stop worrying and overcome your fears.

Therapists help to develop your inner resources

With medical treatment, the best outcome is a cure but therapy works in a different way. A therapist doesn’t ‘fix’ you but gives you the inner resources (and the outer ones if necessary) you need to deal with the ups and downs of life.

It is an incremental process that happens over time and each session can be a step forward in your progress. Therapy can be difficult and you have to open up to get the benefits.

Therapists use an interactive process

It is a cliché that a therapist will just listen to you and offer little in return. The therapist may speak a little less when getting to know you but as the relationship develops, it becomes more interactive.

However, they are different from life coaches because they will not suggest directly what you have to do. They will guide you towards the solutions they feel are best and it is up to you to apply what you learn during sessions.
