It’s an illustrative word, but most realtors unfortunately shy away from describing property as a “compound” in their listings. But if one had to hole up in seclusion, this $17.9 million Palm Beach estate has everything for a luxury escape. The recently remodeled 12,700 square-foot mansion was originally designed by famed architect Maurice Fatio in1940. Finished in polished oak and French marble, the 7-bed/10.5-bath Colonial home has gala-sized rooms and patios, chef-designed kitchen, a guest cottage and private boat dock. [via realtor]

Living next to President Obama has it’s perks, but the constant state of security finally proved too “tedious” for homeowners Bill and Jacky Grimshaw, who recently started giving tours and accepting offers for their 6,000 square-foot Chicago home. The 17-room home at 5040 South Greenwood is situated in the Kenwood neighborhood, right next door to the first family’s Chicago home. The home was built in 1906 and was used to house officers stationed near Hyde Park in World War II, later becoming a boarding house for a small military school nearby. The Grimshaws bought the house in 1973 and in 2005, the newly elected Illinois senator and his family moved in to the house next door. The realtors are vetting potential buyers and will give tours of the house through October. [via luxo, pics via 5040greenwood]

Modern Mediterranean-style homes carry the ubiquity of palm trees in South Florida, but the $12 million estate at 325 Cocoplum Rd. stands apart from it’s newer counterparts with an antique, old-world veneer and subdued luxury embellishments. The 6-bed/5.5-bath home has 8,810 square feet situated on just an acre of waterfront Coral Gables real estate. The classic lines of the home are echoed in a simple pool and sidewalks that cut through groves of fruit trees. The home is surrounded by a wraparound porch, scads of patio space and a private boat dock, while the interior is filled with dark woods, ornate wallpapering and marble floors. [via realtor]
