Van Heusen Buys Tommy Hilfiger For 3 Billion Van Heusen Buys Tommy Hilfiger For $3 Billion

Manhattan, New York-based Phillips-Van Heusen, the apparel company that owns brands such as Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole and Izod, announced Monday that it would acquire Tommy Hilfiger from private-equity firm Apax Partners in a $3 billion buyout deal. Apax acquired Hilfiger in 2006 for $1.6 billion.

The Tommy Hilfiger brand – preppy, lots of color – debuted in 1985 with a clothing line for men, then expanded into shoes, accessories, fragrance and home products for men, women and kids. The Hilfiger brand really shot through the roof in the ’90s, but by the later part of the decade consumer tastes were shifting and Hilfiger was no longer the ‘it’ fashion brand.

wine tasting flu shots Get Your Flu Shot While Tasting Wine

There’s light at the end of the tunnel for those who wouldn’t get a flu shot because they hate needles. Dr. Scott Hanlon has found an interesting way to fight the anxiety of getting a vaccine by pairing it with a session of wine tasting. On September 17th from 7 to 9 pm the physician will be the host of the “vaccine and vino” event at the South Loop Wine Cellar on 1442 S. Michigan Ave, where a $40 shot also allows you to taste five different wines — about two glasses. For those who’d worry about the effects, Dr. Julie Morita, medical director for the immunization program at the Chicago Department of Public Health, said that “there’s no medical reason not to have a glass of wine and receive a vaccine”. Sounds like fun, eh? [via ChicagoTribune]

Prodigy Hahn-Bin Cries “My Baby” After Reuniting With His $500,000 Violin

Friday, August 21, 2009 12:00PM - By

Can you imagine the feeling of loosing something that dates back to the 18th century? South Korean violinist Hahn-Bin definitely knows. The fellow was riding in a New York cab from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts to his Chinatown apartment in lower Manhattan, and somehow managed to forget his Giovanni Francesco Pressenda violin — which is worth a mere $500,000. The instrument was later found through the cab’s GPS tracking device and Hahn-Bin is said to have cried “my baby” when he got his hands on it, again. The 22-year-old violinist is preparing to make his debut at Carnegie Hall in October, so we wonder what safety measures he’ll take for his next taxi ride. [via Luxuo]

mad men Mad Men Scooping Up Emmy Nominations in Style

Mad Men Emmy Madness – Here at StyleCrave, we love Mad Men.  Apparently, so do the Emmys, who have honored the hit AMC show with 16 nominations.  Actor Jon Hamm has been nominated for Lead Actor in a Drama, and appears to be a shoe in for the award against decent competition from the likes of Hugh Laurie of House and Michael C. Hall of Dexter.  The show Mad Men is especially relevant in the world of mens style, as it’s Madison Avenue throwback fashion has inspired a new sartorial sensibility.  We’re happy to see the show’s continued success, if only for the fact that smoking hot redhead Christina Hendricks will continue to grace the small screen…
