QUAMTA’s going to offer some pieces this fall that will suit a select number of leather lovers. Their looks aren’t for everybody, but the nifty pouches and zipped holders could help you stay more organized. Billfolds, wallets, and coin pouches are all represented in the QUAMTA collection. Exotic leathers are exactly what you’d expect from a South Africa-based label, and they don’t disappoint: ostrich and python are included in the offerings. There’s a stunning wallet in dark brown and a neat round coin holder in tan, with other notable pieces mixing colors a bit more for pep. The black leather has an impressive sheen, and the texture truly shows up well.

The piece shown below definitely evokes the ’80s, with the use of pieced and textured leathers. They remind me of one of the most vile of thrift store/charity shop finds, the patchwork leather jacket (circa 1987), but they narrowly miss being fug. The leather’s toned-down and looks fairly clean and simple; the patchwork detailing is done in a way that appears a tad kitschy, that’s all. Of course, superior craftsmanship and a tradition of quality leather work add more appeal to the leather accessories, available this fall. [via hypebeast]

6 Accessories Hipsters Have Temporarily Co-opted, And Therefore Gutted

The hipsterdom fashion universe is a pastiche of things defined more or less by the level of irony they can convey. This means - like a ravenous, all-consuming blob - the hipster wolf-pack adopts certain items and inadvertently redefines them until they’ve lost most of their original meaning. Here’s a short list of things outlining exactly what we mean.

Bow Ties

Who used to wear it:

Old-school statesmen…

Black Muslims…

What it used to mean: This cute little bowtie belies the absurd amount of power you hold in your hands. Just because you wear this inexplicable thing doesn’t mean you can’t/won’t do stuff like raise taxes on candy-ass commoners, politely and gentlemanly suppress a silly insurrection on one of your many faraway colonies, and wager your country’s GDP on a horse race over brandys and cigars.

Also, the white man best not fuck with you.

What it means now: How ironic. I’m wearing a bowtie.

Full rim eyeglasses

Who used to wear it: Army recruits with poor eyesight…

Nerds who actually are nerds…

What it used to mean: Your army-issued lenses won’t break, not even if you step on a land mine. You might be eviscerated, but these babies scream fine-made American craftsmanship, and were soundly beaten by the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ as one on the initiatives designed to usher the sociological aspects of the armed forces into the 21st century. If you’re the kind not into guns, you might start thinking about forging an alliance with black people to help thwart your jock enemies.

What it means now: How ironic. I’m wearing square glasses.

Wool caps

Who used to weat it: People who were cold. Because it’s a wool cap, and…that’s what you do when you’re outside and it’s cold. You wear something on your head. No big deal, unless you have half a mind to take on nature while you’re at it…

What it used to mean: Well, let’s see here. You wear this because it’s cold outside and you don’t want you’re ears to freeze and shrivel. When it’s not cold outside, you don’t wear it. Unless you want to hide some high pattern baldness, why the hell would you wear this thing when it’s 90 degrees outside?

What it means now: How ironic. I’m wearing a wool cap, and it’s 90 degrees outside.

Fedoras

Who used to wear it: Private investigators…

Prohibition-era gangsters…

Irascible old football coaches who will kick your ass if you don’t stop crying…

What it used to mean: You’re too important/badass for everybody else to see the top of your head. You have more hair, and it’s better-coiffed than everybody else’s, but they’ll never see it because your time is precious, and you have an important meeting to get to at city hall. Or maybe you’re going to secret conference to discuss assassinating the heads of the five families. Or maybe some dame just walked into your office with a sob story, and it’s up to you to solve the case and leave her sexually indebted to you.

What it means now: How ironic. I’m wearing a fedora.

Stereo plug-in size headphones

Who used to wear them: Anybody who was alive in the 70s…

What they used to mean: You lived in an era other people wish they could magically hearken back to. In your time, rock stars were too busy banging chicks and pounding Jack Daniels to write mushy, self-pitying break-up songs about their high school girlfriends. While everybody else snaps back to reality, you’re going to smoke this J and have AIDS-less sex with your woman. Oh yeah, there’s a chance you might be the father of somebody reading this.

What it means now: How ironic. I’m wearing gigantic headphones.

Keffiyeh Scarves

Who usually wears/wore it: Mostly just this guy…

What it used to mean: You don this out of Palestinian nationalism, or possibly just to confuse any Westerner watching you protest on TV (so…is it a hat, or a scarf?). The hearty blood of your ancestors inks your keffiyeh in black and white. The fabric adorning your neck is woven with centuries of tradition and sand-weathered pride. It’s not a keffiyeh, it’s a way of life.

What it means now: How ironic. I’m wearing a keffiyeh. If anybody asks, I’m protesting against corporations. Corporations, man.

Kichizo by Porter Classic Card Holder, Keychain Set

What caught my eye was the keychain from Kichizo pictured here, which features two dangling coins and a fat clip. The card holder from thick leather is nice, too. Impeccably fashioned, the card holders feature white topstitching and a simple golden zip and leather pull tab. These card holders are embossed with the “Kichizo” label and are available at Porter Classic along with the keychains. [via hypebeast]

Antwerp Twins: The New Diamond Cut

Diamond shoppers who are tiring of the traditional brilliant cut, but still want something round, may consider a new cut called Antwerp Twins. Named for the twin babies 3D Diamonds chief executive Eva Van Looverren birthed one day after this cut’s conception, Antwerp Twins was just standardized by the HRD. The “twins” terminology comes from dome-shaped faceting on both on the crown and the pavilion. Gone is the traditional smooth table you see in a brilliant cut, resulting in a balanced contrast pattern that shines even brighter. Antwerp Twins will be showcased at a diamond show in Hong Kong, but it’s not clear when you’ll be able to pick up one of your own. [Diamonds.net via Luxist]

Andy Warhol’s Million Dollar Art Collection Stolen

The Los Angeles Police have reported that a multi-million dollar collection of Andy Warhol art work has been stolen from the house of businessman Richard Weisman. Dubbed “The Athletes” collection, these missing works include 10 brightly colored silk screen paintings depicting famous athletes like Muhammad Ali and OJ Simpson, among others, and a portrait of Weisman himself. The collector — who was a friend of Warhol and a former investment banker, discovered the theft on September 3rd. As of now, there are no immediate leads or suspects. [via Luxuo]

The Markham Console Bar or When Rustic Goes Badass

Inspired by an antique workbench, this raw, natural looking bar comes with a wheat stain finish and is made from a pine veneer– with saw marks, grooves and peg hole details. The 13,000 square-foot townhome has accommodations for three staffers, an on-site security room and a palatial indoor pool outfitted with a “mood altering” lighting system. On sale for $72.8 million, the new owner will also be purchasing charming English-only residential amenities like a drawing room and a cloakroom, which sounds Victorian and really cool, but unfortunately is either a glorified closet or bathroom. A bowling shrine unlikely to attract the staggering, distended bellies and Bud Light Lime-infused sweaty sheen sopped off hobby leaguers at the alleys that populate most of this country, New York’s newly renovated Brooklyn Bowl is also part restaurant, bar and venue and looks like a ball.

Inhabiting the 23,000 square-foot former warehouse home of Hecla Iron Works, the alley was painstakingly retrofitted to house 16 pristine lanes and a 600-capacity performance space. Touted as the world’s first bowling alley built for L.E.E.D certification, Brooklyn Bowl is wind-powered and uses LED lights, reclaimed cork flooring, recycled truck tire stage flooring and re-purposed wood and glass throughout. Sixteen flat-screen TVs are spread throughout the alley, along with nine projectors and eight HD Cineflex screens and a state-of-the art stage lighting and sound system. The best part: Brooklyn Bowl’s “no bottle” or can policy, which means the bar stocks beers worth pouring into a glass. [via brooklynbowl, pics by Adam Macchia]

Big Green Egg: For Serious Charcoal Grilling

Big Green Egg Grill – If you’re strictly a burgers and dogs kind of griller, move along. Everyone else, meet the Big Green Egg. It’s eponymous shape makes it ideal for grilling foul, as the 18-inch model supports up to a 20-pound turkey. For smaller stuff, there’s a tactical advantage: The ceramic shell allows the Big Green Egg to reach temperatures of 600 degrees, but it can also keep a low heat of 200 degrees for smoking briskets and ribs. And because the shell manages heat so efficiently, the egg uses less charcoal than a more conventional grill. Who knows, maybe the savings will reimburse the $700 price tag over time. Award-winning, Spacious $2.8 Million Manhattan Triplex

With its 11-foot ceilings, trio of balconies and west Manhattan address, the penthouse triplex at 105 W. 89th Street is a spacious, functional oasis at the cluttered city center. Architects at Marble Fairbanks combined two townhouses for the $2.8 million condo, which was built for the founder of a large health-care company. The owner tasked the architects to create a home that could also serve both work functions and social events and be easily converted to accommodate out-of-town business guests. The three-story, 2,450 square-foot condo has a 600 square-foot rooftop terrace, four bedrooms, a large atrium skylight, a pair of wood burning fireplaces, electronic window shades and a home theater and has won awards from the AIA and has been featured in several design publications.
