You don't need to modify Ural for cross Canada or any other tours.
Ural did fantastic job improving the quality and reliability in the last a couple of years.
Unfortunately for the company, Ural reputation is way behind the real level of quality and reliability.
Check this link, the guy made 25,000 km trip around the US on Ural Gear-Up bike last summer. It’s very good reading and the best proof of Ural capability.

Beautiful old relic. 60 year old technology is unchanged, Saw one of these on the street in Peterborough ON in Canada, damn thing looked like it fell out of the 1940's into this decade from the original factory box. The owner was using it as a show bike, not a serious rider, due to many mechanical drawbacks, but assured me that with a few electrical and engine modifications, 12volt system, and a bigger oil pump, it would do cross Canada tours easily. A very impressive heavy highway cruiser with ground clearance for rough terrain and a memorable sound. A modern day relic from the past!
