A stapled steel shroud canopies Casa de los Pinos, a mountain “house among the pines” rooted in the rocky El Esparragal hamlet of Murcia, Spain. The XPIRAL architecture team, led by Javier Peña Galiano, designed the home with transparent walls, which unifies individual rooms into a single visual space. A cantilevered upper area creates an exterior access corridor that shades and cools. On-site rocks and trees are recycled or relocated to bolster the home’s footing, contrasting high-tech materials like thermo-clay and “heat mirror” glazing, which help absorb and deflect sunlight to insulate the home more efficiently.
